Alfa Aesar offers synthesis capabilities from various locations globally. One of our primary lab- and kilo-scale organic synthesis units is located in Heysham in northwest England. Our high purity materials are made in Royston, England. And our newest plant in Yantai, China includes a pilot plant with eight reactors ranging from 100L to 2000L capacity. Our experienced development and production teams can deliver a variety of products to meet the needs of customers in fields varying from pharmaceuticals to semiconductors, structural materials and imaging.
Manufacturing and Production
Alfa Aesar and Johnson Matthey chemists have the skills and production expertise to deliver quality fine chemicals at varying scales. This flexibility allows Alfa Aesar’s manufacturing teams to deliver products to meet the diverse needs of our customers at exacting specifications.
Semi-Bulk to Metric Tons
At the new Alfa Aesar Synmax production labs in Yantai, China, an experienced team uses proven techniques and state of the art facilities to offer diverse production capabilities. The 2,100 square meter pilot plant building houses eight reactors ranging from 100L up to our two 2000L glass lined vessels. The pilot plant includes specialized equipment for distillation and low temperature chemistry.
Our research scale labs in Heysham, UK and Yantai, China employ dozens of PhD production chemists utilizing nearly 200 fume hoods and a broad variety of chemical reactions. Our teams are process oriented, developing routes that are both scalable and efficient. Our Heysham, Yantai, and Royston teams are set up to handle projects in the 10g to 1kg range.
cGMP and API Production
We now offer cGMP and API production in kilo scale to high capacity. Riverside, our dedicated API manufacturing facility in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, further expands our large scale operations. With a total reactor capacity of 140,000L and a 5,600m2 production area, this facility is a scalable, flexible, multi-purpose production facility with highly automated, DCS recipe driven operations. Riverside is equipped to manufacture parenteral grade APIs (microbial/endotoxin environmental controls) and is licensed to produce DEA controlled substances in Schedules I and II.
Full Time Equivalents
Alfa Aesar Synmax also offers Full Time Equivalent (FTE) services for those customers not requiring GMP certification. A variety of packages are available utilizing our R&D labs, Kilo labs and the pilot plant. Contact an Alfa Aesar sales office for more details.

Organic Intermediates and Reagents
Through our own manufacturing facilities and key manufacturing partnerships, Alfa Aesar can provide a broad range of organometallic and organic compounds, including aldehydes, alkenes, amines, aromatics, esters, ethers, hydrocarbons, ketones, and more. Many organic and organometallic compounds are available in semi-bulk quantities from stock; some are in regular production and are available in bulk for next day shipment. Precious Metal Compounds and Homogenous Catalysts
Alfa Aesar offers a full range of precious metal salts and solutions manufactured to stringent specifications. Fuel cell catalysts for anodes, cathodes, electrodes
Johnson Matthey is a leading developer of catalysts and other products for fuel cell research and development. Alfa Aesar exclusively offers these products from stock in bulk and semi-bulk quantities. The HiSPEC® line of precious metal catalysts provides superior performance in proton exchange membrane (PEM) and direct methanol fuel cells, for fuel cell research. HiFUEL® fuel processing catalysts and gas treatment products are base metal catalysts for use in fuel cell and other distributed hydrogen processing applications. Alfa Aesar offers a variety of fuel cell components, including Nafion® membranes, Toray™ carbon paper, cathodes, anodes and membrane electrode assembly (MEA) products.
Smopex® Scavenger Systems
The use of metal catalysts within the pharmaceutical industry allows the efficient transformation or combination of molecules that would otherwise be unfeasible. However, these metals can become an impurity in the final product. Smopex metal scavengers offer one of the most efficient options for removing these metal impurities.
Specialty Silver Compounds
Alfa Aesar is renowned as a leader in specialized high purity silver products. By employing a number of starting materials, we are able to consistently control specific impurities. We have the capability of producing batch sizes from 25kg through 200 kg. Many silver compounds are photosensitive. All our specialized silver compounds are packaged in lightproof containers. VERTEC organo-titanates are extremely effective and versatile catalysts for esterification reactions of all types. They range from relatively simple, highly reactive titanium species to more specialized and custom-made products.
VERTEC catalysts are used at industrial scale to produce:
- A wide range of plasticizers phthalates, adipates, trimellitates, azelates and sebacates.
- Simple acrylates such as butyl and 2-ethyl-hexyl acrylates and more complex acrylates such as those used as water treatment chemicals.
- Fine Chemical Intermediates.

- Specialty esters as used in pharmaceutical, flavours and fragrances.
The wide selection of standard VERTEC organo-titanates is fitting for most applications, but custom formulations can be made for specific requirements. Alfa Aesar now offers research and development quantities of standard VERTEC products from stock.

Puratronic® inorganic compounds
The Puratronic line of base metal salts, solutions and pure elements is the leading choice of pharmaceutical and high technology companies needing the basic building blocks for many research and development processes. Each Puratronic compound has a minimum purity of 99.99% (metals basis) and each is backed by a lot-specific certificate of analysis. Ultra Dry™ anhydrous salts
Alfa Aesar provides a comprehensive line of ultra dry, anhydrous salts, the first choice for air and moisture sensitive applications. Ultra Dry materials are manufactured under exacting conditions to ensure that impurities and water content are in the parts per million range. High purity starting materials are used in the manufacturing process, resulting in typical overall purities of 99.9% to 99.999%. Typical analysis is by GDMS, which ensures high accuracy and detail. All Ultra Dry salts are ampouled under argon, and most are available in -10 mesh bead and powder form. Ultra Dry anhydrous salts are available in multi-kilogram quantities.
REacton® Rare Earth Products
Through a combination of strong sourcing and manufacturing capabilities, Alfa Aesar has become a leading global producer of rare earth metals, alloys and compounds, including a wide range of oxides, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, and trifluoromethanesulfonates. Nanopowders & Dispersions
Alfa Aesar offers a wide range of nanoparticle products ranging from pure elements to oxide powders and dispersions. As an exclusive distributor of Nanophase Technologies products, Alfa Aesar stocks an extensive range of raw nanoparticles as well as nanoparticle dispersions. The Nanophase production processes produce particles with the average sizes ranging from 8-80nm from NanoArc® synthesis and from 7-60 from Physical Vapor Synthesis (PVS). Alfa Aesar also accepts requests for custom production of nanoparticle products.

Pure metals and pure elements
Pure metals and pure elements from Alfa Aesar are used in applications such as single crystal growth, fundamental materials research, photovoltaic technology, and the manufacture of sputtering targets and vacuum evaporation source materials. With the advent of advanced materials research for the microelectronics industry, Alfa Aesar introduced the Puratronic® line of base metals and Premion® precious metals. Platinum has properties that make it the ideal choice for many analytical applications. This metal resists the action of almost all acids and is unaffected by a wide variety of corrosive substances. It has a high melting point, a low heat capacity, and can be heated in air without any weight loss due to oxidation.
Zirconia grain stabilized (ZGS) platinum has been developed by Johnson Matthey to be resistant to grain growth, contamination and deformation at high temperatures. Through a process called dispersion strengthening, ZGS materials are produced by incorporating a fine insoluble phase dispersed uniformly throughout the platinum metal matrix.
Johnson Matthey also developed ZGS platinum 5% gold especially for non-wetting applications. It combines the workability and non-wetting properties of ordinary platinum 5% gold with the hot strength of rhodium platinum alloys, yet it is easier to fabricate and offers better stability. Its resistance to contamination makes it ideal for use in X-ray fluorescencesample preparation.
