Ruthenium, 10% on activated carbon powder is used in hydrogenation of aromatic ring systems, particularly the hindered systems. It finds wide use for the reduction of aliphatic carbonyl compounds and carboxylic acids to alcohols, hydrogenation of anilines to cyclohexylamines, synthesis of ammonia, depolymerization of carbohydrates, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and hydrogenation of glucose to produce sorbitol.
