Vinyl acetate is used in the preparation of polyvinyl acetate emulsions and polyvinyl alcohol. It acts as a precursor to polyvinyl acetate. It serves as an ingredient in furniture-glue. It is also used to prepare copolymers with other monomers such as ethylene, acrylic acid. Further, it is used to make adhesives, paints and plastics.
For example of mercuric acetate-catalyzed transesterification to long-chain vinyl esters, see: Org. Synth. Coll., 4, 977 (1963).
For thermal [2+2] cycloaddition with chlorotrifluoroethylene, see: Org. Synth. Coll., 5, 235 (1973); and with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate to give a ß-lactam: Org. Synth. Coll., 8, 3 (1993).
