Citrate is an intermediate in the TCA cycle and fatty acid synthesis. It is an allosteric modulator of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, the enzyme that regulates the conversion of acetyl-CoA to malonyl-CoA. It has anticoagulant activity and is a calcium chelator.
