Applications

Hexamethyldisiloxane is used as a solvent in organic reactions. It finds application as an international standard for <sup>1</sup>H NMR spectroscopy for calibrating chemical shift. Further, it is used in liquid bandages to protect skin from irritation. In addition, it is used to measure tissue oxygen tension as a receptor molecule. It is also used to make low-k dielectric materials for the semi-conductor industries by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition(PECVD) method.

Notes

Hygroscopic. Keep the container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, acids, bases and oxygen.

In the presence of FeCl3, reacts with benzotrichlorides to give substituted benzoyl chlorides in good yields: J. Chem. Soc., Chem. Commun., 808 (1977).
