Soluble in water. Also soluble in glacial acetic acid, ethanol and methanol. Insoluble in chloroform.

Applications

2-Picolinic acid is used as a chelate for alkaline earth metals. Used to prepare picolinato ligated transition metal complexes. In synthetic organic chemistry, has been used as a substrate in the Mitsunobu reaction and in the Hammick reaction.

Notes

Stable under recommended storage conditions. Incompatible with oxidizing agents, reducing agents and bases.

Has been found to accelerate significantly oxidations with chromic acid: J. Am. Chem. Soc., 98, 1026 (1976).

Amino groups can be protected, by DCC coupling, as picolinamides, which can be cleaved with acidic Cu(OAc)2: Synth. Commun., 383 (1972).
