Cyclooctanemethanol is used as a high boiling solvent and heat transfer agent. It is also useful for conversion into plastic and lacquer base materials. Cyclooctanemethanol can be oxidized to cyclooctane carboxylic acid and the acid can be converted into octahydro-2-oxo-1H-azonine (S-aminooctanoic acid lactam), which is a starting material for the production of nylon-8.
