Ampicillin is a -lactam antibiotic with an amino group side chain attached to the penicillin structure. It inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis by inactivating transpeptidases on the inner surface of the bacterial cell membrane. Effective on Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.
