Literature References

Lithium is the most reactive metal in the Birch reduction of aromatic rings, and is also less sensitive than other metals to iron-catalyzed reaction with ammonia. For reviews of the Birch reduction, see: Tetrahedron, 45, 1579 (1989); Org. React., 42, 1 (1992), and of Li-amine systems in reduction: Synthesis, 391 (1972).

/n

Birch reduction of 1-methylnaphthalene leads to preferential reduction of the non-substituted ring. This selectivity is reversed by the introduction of a silyl group, an effect which is general for silylated polynuclear aromatics: Tetrahedron, 45, 5441 (1989). For selective reduction of acetylenes to (E)-alkenes in 1,3-diaminopropane, see: Synth. Commun., 23, 2397 (1993).
