Nucleosides and nucleotides are the building blocks of RNA and DNA. They are derived from nitrogenous bases and are either purines (adenine and guanine) or pyrimidines (cytosine, uracil, and thymine). Nucleosides are glycosylamines consisting of a purine or pyrimidine base covalently linked to a ribose or deoxyribose sugar. Nucleotides are the 5'-phosphate esters of nucleosides and may contain one to three phosphate groups.
