Antagonists block the action of agonists which means antagonists are receptor ligands that block or dampen agonist responses upon binding. Antagonists do not provoke any biological effects on their own but prevent actions from agonists. Antagonists can bind receptors at the same or different sites as an agonist would, and their effect can be reversible or irreversible.
