Organozinc Reagents - Alfa Aesar

Organozinc compounds are a class of organometallic compounds which contain a carbon-zinc bond. In contrast to C-Mg and C-Li bonds, the C-Zn bond is highly covalent, and hence organozinc reagents are less reactive than the analogous organometallic reagents, such as Grignard and organolithium reagents. Organozinc compounds are usually volatile, pyrophoric and sensitive to oxidation. These compounds are classified on the basis of the number of the carbon atoms directly bound to the zinc atom. The three major classes of organozinc compounds are:

  1. ionic zinc compounds, otherwise called organozincates
  2. diorgano zinc compounds
  3. heteroleptic RZnX compounds in which X is an electronegative substituent, often a halogen atom

Organozincates and other organozinc compounds are valuable synthetic tools in organic chemistry. Some of the synthetic uses of organozinc compounds are: for the stereo selective alkylation reaction of cyclic ketones, conjugate addition reaction to alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, ring opening reactions of epoxides and oxo vanadium-induced ligand coupling of aryltrimethyl zincates. In many of the reactions, organozinc compounds appear as intermediates, and a few popular examples are: the Reformatsky reaction, Simmons-Smith reaction, Negishi coupling reaction, Frankland–Duppa reaction, Fukuyama coupling reaction, and Barbier reaction.
