Zinc oxide is used as a sun screener. It serves as an additive in products such as cigarette filters, plastics, anticorrosive coatings, ceramics, glass, cement, lubricants, ointments, adhesives, sealants, pigments, batteries, ferrites, fire retardants, and first-aid tapes. Zinc oxide plays an important role in textiles as UV-absorber. It can protect rubber from fungi and UV light. As a wide-bandgap semiconductor with favorable properties, it has the potential for use in transparent electrodes, in nanorod sensors, in liquid crystal displays, as thin-film transistors and light emitting diodes, and in heat-protecting windows.
