Boron, Phosphorus, Silicon, and Sulfur Compounds

The organoboron, organophosphorus, organosilicon and organosulphur compounds are compounds with carbon-boron, carbon-phosphorus, carbon-silicon and carbon-sulphur bonds respectively. However it is not necessary for the organophosphorus compounds to have a direct phosphorus-carbon (P-C) bond to be included in this group. The C-B bond has low polarity and due to its lower electronegativity, boron often forms electron-deficient compounds. Due to the large difference in electronegativity, organosilicon compounds do not involve double bonds like its carbon counterparts. Organosulphur compounds are often associated with foul odors but constitute many of the sweetest compounds.

Numerous organoboron, phosphorus, silicon and sulphur are known for their use in pharmaceuticals. Organoboron compounds are useful as reagents, catalysts, and synthetic intermediates in many chemical reactions. The organophosporus compounds are highly effective insecticides. Organosilicon compounds are widely employed in commercial products such as sealants, caulks, adhesives, and coatings. The organic sulphur compounds are used in chemical processing of coal or crude oil and it has also the industrial uses such as production of precursor chemicals for plastics or pharmaceutical production. The organic sulphur compounds are also used for petroleum distillation for gasolines, diesel, and other grades of fuel oils production.
