Brazing is a metal-joining process whereby a filler metal or brazing alloy is heated above its melting point and distributed between two or more close-fitting parts by capillary action. The filler metal is brought slightly above its melting temperature while protecting with a suitable atmosphere, usually a flux.
Various brazing products available are brazing alloys, brazing paste, brazing powder, brazing preforms, medical grade material and flux. Brazing alloys are used as filler materials; few examples of brazing alloys are alloys of aluminum, bronze, copper, gold, nickel, palladium, platinum, silver, aluminum-silicon, amorphous brazing foil using nickel, iron, copper, silicon, boron, phosphorus, etc. Brazing preforms are custom made shapes available for brazing applications. Platinum, gold, silver and palladium alloys are used for medical grade products.
Brazing pastes are comprised of a brazing filler metal and a binder that suspends the powder in its matrix for a specified length of time. Brazing powders are produced with coarse or fine sizes using various methods, including atomization, sintering, and crushing. Brazing flux is a material that shields the joint surface from air which prevents oxide formation after applying a chemical compound. A number of formulations of flux exist for a variety of metal joining procedures and fluxes consist of mild organic acid or strong inorganic acid.
