Applications

Sodium perchlorate is used in chemical analysis and in explosive materials, fireworks, and rocket motors. It is the precursor for the preparation of other perchlorate salts. It is also employed as a chaotrophic agent in DNA extraction and hybridization reactions in molecular biology. It prevents the binding of phenolic compounds to RNA during extraction. In addition, it is used in batteries, plastics and in rubber products. It is also used as a nonreactive electrolyte. Further, it is an eluent component used for analysis of biological samples by liquid chromatography.

Notes

Hygroscopic in nature. Recommended to avoid contact with concentrated sulfuric acid due to its explosive nature. Incompatible with powdered metals and strong acids.
