Soluble in water. Insoluble in alcohol.

Potassium peroxydisulfate is used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis. It is involved in the Elbs persulfate oxidation of phenols and the Boyland-Sims oxidation of anilines. In solution, it gives radicals and is used to initiate polymerization reactions to prepare styrene-butadiene rubber and polytetrafluoroethylene. It is used as a bleaching agent in various hair bleaches, as an ion exchange agent, a plating agent and a surface treating agent.

Moisture sensitive. Incompatible with organic materials, strong reducing agents, powdered metals, strong bases, alcohols, phosphorous, anhydrides, halogens and acids.
