The group IV metals such as titanium, zirconium and hafnium form amido complexes in organometallic chemistry; for example, the bridged bis-amido group 4 metal compounds find application as catalysts in the polymerization of alpha olefins. The amido complexes of late transition metals have been successfully applied in several catalytic C-N bond forming reactions. Di(t-butyl)amido complexes of transition metals are useful in the chemical vapor deposition of metals and metal nitrides.

The widely used metal amido complexes in organometallic chemistry contain the weakly acidic hydrocarbon groups such as cyclopentadiene, and phenylacetylene. The amido complexes such as Cp2[Zr(NH3)2]2, and Cp2[Hf(NH3)2]2, are used in the synthesis of fluoride compounds. The organometallic zirconium complex, Cp2Zr[N(CH3)2, is employed in the polymerization of acrylonitrile. The bis(amidate)bis(amido) titanium complex efficiently catalyzes regioselective intermolecular alkyne hydroamination (Yim, J. C.; Bexrud, J. A.; Ayinla, R. O.; Leitch, D. C.; Schafer, L. L. Bis(amidate)bis(amido) Titanium Complex: A Regioselective Intermolecular Alkyne Hydroamination Catalyst. J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 2015-2028). The organometallic amines find use in the labelling of the C-terminus of amino acids and peptides (Hess, A.; Brosch, O.; Weyhermüller, T.; Metzler-Nolte, N. “Synthesis of organometallic amines and their coupling to the C-terminus of amino acids and peptides”. J. Organomet. Chem. 1999, 589, 75-84). For the transfer hydrogenation of ketones and to promote the catalytic aerobic oxidation of alcohols, the amido-Ir complexes bearing C–N chelating amine ligands and corresponding hydrido(amine) complexes are employed.
