Zeolites are microporous crystalline materials with an inorganic, three-dimensional host structure comprised of fully linked, corner-sharing tetrahedral. Zeolites occur naturally, however some have been synthesized over the years. Zeolites are the aluminosilicate members of the family of microporous solids known as molecular sieves.

Zeolites are widely used as ion-exchange beds in domestic and commercial water purification, softening, and other applications. In chemistry, zeolites are used to separate molecules for analysis. Zeolites are also widely used as catalysts and sorbents. Their structures are well-defined, with adjustable acidity which make them highly active in a large variety of reactions.

In addition to natural zeolite, Alfa Aesar offers series of Zeolites for use in variety of industries.

  • Zeolite Y is used as a cracking catalyst in petroleum refinery catalytic cracking units to convert high-boiling fractions of petroleum crude to more valuable gasoline, diesel and other products.
  • Zeolite ZSM-5 is used in hydrocarbon isomerization and the alkylation of hydrocarbons, and as a catalyst support.
  • Zeolite á is used in isomerization of waxes, and Friedel Crafts reactions (alkylation and acylation).
  • Zeolite Ferrierite is used in commercial filters, ion-exchange beds, and as a catalyst for the acid-catalyzed isomerization of n-butenes to isobutene.
  • Zeolite mordenite is used for the acid-catalyzed isomerization of alkanes and aromatics.
