Allyl iodides or bromides form allylindium reagents which undergo Reformatsky or Barbier type reactions with aldehydes under mild conditions to give homoallylic alcohols. Due to their low basicity, these reagents can be effective even in the presence of labile hydrogens without protection: J. Org. Chem., 53, 1831 (1988). Hence, allylation reactions can also be carried out successfully in water: Tetrahedron Lett., 32, 7017 (1991); J. Chem. Soc., Chem. Commun., 747 (1992); Org. Synth., 77, 107 (1999). Indium is the most effective metal for promoting Barbier-type allylations in water. Bromoacetonitrile readily forms an organoindium reagent which adds to carbonyl groups to give ß-hydroxy nitriles: Bull. Chem. Soc. Jpn., 67, 1126 (1994). Reaction of electron-deficient alkenes with active methylene dibromides in the presence of indium leads to cyclopropyl compounds; aldehydes similarly give epoxides: J. Chem. Soc., Chem. Commun., 1286 (1989). ɑ-Chlorocarbonyl compounds give allylic epoxides: J. Chem. Soc., Perkin 1, 946 (2001).

Has also been found to be an versatile, selective reducing agent, e.g. for azides to amines: Tetrahedon Lett., 40, 3937 (1999), imines to amines, quinolines and isoquinolines to the tetrahydro derivatives, indoles to indolines, oximes and nitro compounds to amines: J. Chem. Soc., Perkin 1, 955 (2001).
